S
tanding on a wooden board or table, the pictured basket here contains roses, carnations, fuchsia and
other
fl
owers with the basket appearing to have been pushed beneath an elder bush in
fl
ower. In ancient
popular belief, the elder is a bush providing protection from evil, and it has guarded the corner of many a
house. It is associated with the light summer nights, when its perfume is released and its bunches of
fl
ow-
ers hold the light. This combination of cultivated and wild plants is sometimes seen in Jensen’s work, pos-
sibly painted in his own garden in Gentofte. As a type, it is reminiscent of another Jensen picture in the Loeb
collection,
Pink Roses
, W
hite Lilies, Honeysuckles, and Ivory Branches,
which also mixes the wild and the culti-
vated, the cut and the still growing.
If the picture is admired for the
fl
ower language of the time, the elder refers to frugality and limited
means, and the carnation teasingly asks: “Do you really seriously mean what you are telling me?” The Rosa
centifolia symbolises a rich emotional life, love and delight, but also silence.
A small replica (or a copy of the painting),
